How to Play Caribbean Stud Poker
There are many poker variants being played in casinos all over the world. Although these poker games follow a fundamental set of universal rules there are certain rule variations made that make it distinct from each other.
One popular poker variant played in most casinos is called Caribbean Stud Poker. As a way of distinguishing this type of poker from other types, I am going to give you the basic rules of the game:
* The player makes an ante wager as well as an optional progressive side bet of $1
* Each player as well as the dealer will get five cards each. All of the cards are dealt with their faces down except for one card on the dealer's hand that will be exposed. The player can examine his own cards but he cannot share the information to anyone.
* After having been given the hand, the player has the option to either fold or raise.
* If the player folds his hand he forfeits all of his cards, ante bet as well as his side bet if he has made any
* If the player decides to make a raise then he must make a raise wager that is exactly equal to double the existing ante
* The dealer will then turn over his four other cards
* The dealer must have an ace and a king or higher to qualify. Simply put, the lowest qualifying hand would be ace, king, 4, 3 , 2. On the other hand, the highest non qualifying hand would be ace, queen, jack, 10, 9. If the dealer fails to qualify the player will win more money on his ante wager. Additionally, the raise will also be pushed.
* If the dealer qualifies and beats the player, then both the ante and the raise will lose.
* If the dealer qualifies and he loses to the player, then the ante will pay even money and the raise will be met based on the pay table posted on the game table. Different casinos will have different implementable pay tables.
* If the player and the dealer happen to have a tie then both ante and raise will be pushed
* The progressive side bet will be based solely on the poker value of the hand that a player possesses. This will also depend on the various pay tables being used for a particular game table or casino.
The most effective strategy for Caribbean Stud Poker is quite complex and it is quite hard to really master it at a level that would really be used effectively without looking at your notes. But there are two generalizations that can be arrived at and which can be used with almost any hand:
* Always raise with a pair or higher
* Always fold with less than the qualifying hand of the dealer (an ace or king)
It is widely acknowledged that the ace/king hands are the trickiest and as a general rule it helps if the three singletons are high or that the dealer's up card is a jack or less and is a match for one of the player's cards because this will make it harder for a dealer to form his own pair.
